Jack Kirby – co-creator of iconic superheroes such as the The Avengers, Fantastic Four and Thor, creator of Mister Miracle, artist on 2001: A Space Odyssey – and much, much more – would, had he lived, have been 100 this August.

He remains a lasting influence on comic creators to this day. Join comic artist and publisher Tim Perkins, artist Nick Brokenshire , Jack Kirby documentary make Glen Fleming and comics editor and writer John Freeman and find out why his incredible work remains such an influence on comics and comic creators to this day.

A “nuts and bolts” panel, discussing ways comics – and books – are published outside the mainstream today, through self publishing, crowd funding and digital outlets. If you’re a comic creator, come along and find out more from creators who’ve been there, done that and (possibly) got the t-shirt! Just how important is the growing self publishing movement utilising new ways of creating comics?

  • Michael Barrett is the publisher of Preston North End: Rise of the Invincibles, drawn by David Sque
  • John Freeman is a comics writer and editor, currently working in both the mainstream and who has worked on the publication of digital comics
  • Tim Perkins is a self publisher and artist currently working with Curriculum Comics, brings comics into the classroom
  • AS Chambers is an established fantasy author who has successfully self-published numerous novels

Find out more about creating new worlds and times with Doctor Who comics artist Richard Piers Rayner – making a very rare comic convention appearance – and former Doctor Who Magazine editor John Freeman, who also recently edited the critically-acclaimed mini series for Titan Comics, Doctor Who: The Third Doctor – Heralds of Destruction, written by Paul Cornell and drawn by Christopher Jones.
